6 Days Cycling Up Mount Kilimanjaro

Unleash Your Adventure

Wherever your travel dreams lead, HWS Adventures brings them to life. We offer tailor-made itineraries designed to uncover Tanzania most breathtaking destinations.

TOUR HIGHLIGHT

This unique mountain biking adventure follows the Kilema Trail, which runs parallel to the popular Marangu Route on Mount Kilimanjaro. The Kilema route primarily serves as an access road for 4×4 vehicles supplying Horombo Hut and assisting with medical evacuations, making it a wide gravel track that is generally well maintained and suitable for cycling in many sections.

Success on this journey depends largely on one key element—proper acclimatization. For this reason, the entire itinerary is carefully structured with a single goal in mind: preparing your body for summit day.

Throughout the ascent, there will be sections where bicycles must be pushed rather than ridden. While riding the entire route is theoretically possible, it would demand excessive energy. Conserving strength is essential, particularly for the final summit push, which involves a challenging 1,200-meter ascent. To maximize your chances of success, the summit attempt begins shortly after midnight, allowing you to reach the peak at sunrise.

Reaching the summit is rewarded with an unforgettable experience—a complimentary summit photo, breathtaking views from Africa’s highest point, and an exhilarating nearly 5,000-meter descent by bike. It is an achievement that will remain a highlight long after the journey ends.

The Kilema route option with the first night at Kilema Camp is shorter and less demanding overall, allowing for more time on the bike compared to the option that starts with an overnight at Mandara Hut. However, this option comes at a higher cost, as the first night is spent camping in tents, followed by accommodation in the Marangu Route’s traditional A-frame huts for the remaining nights.

MAIN ITINERARY

We have carefully planned out each day to give you the best possible experience. From exploring historic landmarks to tasting delicious local cuisine, each day is packed with adventure and excitement. Join us as we take you on a journey through some of the most fascinating destinations in the world.

Day 1: Arrival in Tanzania

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), you will be warmly welcomed by a member of the HWS Adventures team and transferred to your lodge in Moshi, located at the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro.
Later in the day, you will meet your guides for a detailed tour briefing, followed by a professional bike fitting to ensure comfort and safety for the adventure ahead.

Day 2: Kilema Gate (1,950m) – Horombo Hut (3,705m) – Kilema Camp (2,950m)

After breakfast, meet your guide and transfer to Marangu Gate, passing through the scenic village of Marangu on the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro. Following registration at the park office, continue by vehicle to Kilema Gate.

At the gate, you will complete a final gear check, prepare your daypack, and inspect your mountain bike before starting the ride. The route follows a 4×4 gravel track, climbing steadily from Kilema Gate to Horombo Hut. Strong and experienced riders may be able to cycle most of this section, while regular stops allow time for acclimatization.

Arrival at Horombo Hut is expected around mid-afternoon. After a short rest, the ride continues downhill to Kilema Camp, descending approximately 800 meters over rocky terrain. Careful speed control is essential on this loose and technical section.

At camp, your tent will already be set up by the support team. Dinner is prepared by the cook, and a bowl of warm water is provided for washing. Night temperatures may drop below freezing, so warm clothing is essential.

Cycling Details

  • Kilema Gate to Horombo Hut

    • Time: 5–6 hours

    • Distance: ~16 km

    • Habitat: Montane forest

  • Horombo Hut to Kilema Camp

    • Distance: ~7 km

    • Habitat: Moorland

Day 3: Kilema Camp (2,950m) – Horombo Hut (3,705m)

After breakfast, pack your duffel bags and cycle uphill back to Horombo Hut. The trail is steep with sections of loose rock, requiring careful handling and occasional pushing.

Horombo Hut sits on a broad plateau and often buzzes with trekkers, guides, and porters. After arriving in time for a late lunch, you will head out for an acclimatization ride to Zebra Rocks (4,040m) before returning to Horombo Hut for dinner and overnight.

Cycling Details

  • Kilema Camp to Horombo Hut

    • Time: 2–3 hours

    • Distance: ~7 km

    • Habitat: Moorland

  • Horombo Hut to Zebra Rocks and return

    • Time: 1 hour up, 20 minutes down

    • Distance: ~2 km each way

    • Habitat: Moorland

Day 4: Acclimatization Day – Cycle High, Sleep Low Horombo Hut (3,705m) – Kibo Hut (4,730m) – Horombo Hut

After an early breakfast, begin the ascent into the alpine desert zone. The first section is extremely rocky and eroded, requiring you to push or carry your bike in places. Beyond this point, the trail improves and cycling becomes easier.

The route crosses the vast Saddle, lying between Mount Mawenzi and Mount Kibo. Although relatively flat, the altitude, cold temperatures, and low oxygen levels make this stretch physically demanding. The final kilometer to Kibo Hut is especially tough and requires a slow, steady pace with frequent hydration.

Lunch is served at Kibo Hut before enjoying an exciting downhill ride back to Horombo Hut, descending nearly 800 meters. The last section is technical and requires strong bike control. Dinner and overnight are at Horombo Hut.

Cycling Details

  • Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut and return

    • Time: 4–5 hours up, 1 hour down

    • Distance: 9.6 km each way

    • Habitat: Alpine desert

Day 5: Horombo Hut (3,705m) – Kibo Hut (4,730m)

Wake early and prepare your bags for transfer. After breakfast, cycle once more toward Kibo Hut, pushing bikes on the rough initial section before reaching smoother terrain.

Upon arrival, enjoy lunch and rest. In the late afternoon, there is an optional short walk up the summit trail to familiarize yourself with the route ahead. Kibo Hut is located in a barren alpine environment with basic facilities and no nearby water source.

After an early dinner, prepare your gear for the summit attempt, including warm clothing, headlamps, spare batteries, and insulated water containers. Rest begins around 7:00 PM before the midnight ascent.

Cycling Details

  • Time: 4–5 hours

  • Distance: ~9.6 km

  • Habitat: Alpine desert

Day 6: Summit Day – Uhuru Peak (5,895m)

Shortly before midnight, wake for tea and light snacks before beginning the climb. The trail rises steeply through rocky terrain to Hans Meyer Cave, then zigzags up toward Gillman’s Point on the crater rim. The section known as Jamaica Rocks is particularly demanding and requires carrying the bike for a short distance.

From Gillman’s Point, cycling becomes possible again depending on snow conditions. Skilled riders may be able to ride most of the way to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Reaching the summit brings an overwhelming sense of achievement.

Time at the summit depends on weather conditions before beginning the descent back to Kibo Hut. After a late breakfast, pack your gear for the final descent.

Cycling Details

  • Ascent: 7–8 hours

  • Descent to Kibo Hut: 3–4 hours

  • Distance: ~5.4 km ascent, ~31 km descent

  • Habitat: Scree slopes and icy summit

Day 7: Kibo Hut (4,730m) – Kilema Gate (1,950m)

Today delivers one of the world’s most thrilling downhill mountain bike rides. Starting at Kibo Hut, descend nearly 3,000 meters over approximately 31 km, following gravel tracks all the way to Kilema Gate. This fast, technical ride is challenging and immensely rewarding.

Cycling Details

  • Time: ~3 hours

  • Distance: ~25 km

  • Riding level: Challenging

  • Path: Gravel road

  • Highlight: Mountain biking on Mount Kilimanjaro

We offer organized Tanzania Cultural Safaris that will immerse travelers in the real Tanzanian culture. The trip includes a visit to Chaga tribes, Masai tribes, and Hadzabes bushmen tribes.

Small groups of hadzabe bushmen live around lake eyasi. Their language resembles the click languages of other bushmen further south in the kalahari. Their small population was seriously threatened, in particular during the period when Julius Nyerere tried to introduce his ujuma policy. The tribe resisted the forcible settlement policies and nowadays most of their children have never seen a doctor or school – the bush provides for all their needs.

Tourists will see their simple bush homes where the tree canopy alone or a cave provides them shelter. They live entirely off the bush and from hunting, generally small antelopes and baboons. In rainy seasons, gazelles and antelopes come down from the Ngorongoro or Serengeti to their lush bush lands thereby offering them richer pickings. In the recent past, their hunting activities were resented by trophy hunters and tried to stop their “illegal” hunting.

Dream trip to the roof of Africa Climbing Kilimanjaro was a dream come true and George and his team made our journey to the roof of Africa so enjoyable. The team of guides looked after our group so well. They were all really knowledgeable and made us feel safe and empowered to complete the trek. They regularly checked our oxygen levels, ensured were were drinking enough water and paced us well to acclimatise to the altitude. On summit day George was determined to get me to the top after I fell behind the other two members of my group. He carried my pack, sang to me, comforted me when I cried, and was so patient even when I was walking slower than I thought was humanly possible. I eventually made it to the summit thanks in no small part to him.George always had the safety and comfort of our group in mind. For example, on summit day he made the decision for us to descend to a lower camp than planned for our final night due to the time spent at altitude that day (as I was slow). The whole team of porters were so friendly and professional and felt like family by the end of the trip.I dream of climbing Mount Meru next and will definitely do it with HWS Adventures when I do.

Couldn’t have been better! George provided the best experience possible for my mom and me. From the first meeting and kind, specific instructions and tips, we knew we were in good hands. George’s entire team was experienced, friendly, welcoming and accommodating! The work these people do to provide comprehensive guidance is phenomenal! I would definitely choose George to climb with again. My mom was able to make it to the top at 81 years of age, thanks to George and his brother, Kaburu’s special attention.

Kilimanjaro Machame Route and Safari This summer, my father and I traveled with HWS Adventures. We climbed Kilimanjaro together and followed it with an incredible safari an experience we still think back to all the time.We chose the Machame route, which turned out to be perfect: stunning scenery, enjoyable hiking, and not overwhelmingly difficult. Our guides were exactly what you’d hope for funny, knowledgeable, and genuinely caring. They checked on us every day, made sure we were feeling well, adjusted our pace, and planned breaks so we wouldn’t overexert ourselves. Something we valued greatly about this company is that the porters are paid fairly and their wellbeing is clearly taken seriously. The safari was just as memorable. We spent three days exploring the Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti National Park, seeing incredible wildlife up close. The lodges were wonderful comfortable and located right inside the parks, so we were surrounded by nature at all times. All in all, it was a fantastic trip for me and my dad one we will never forget.

Excellent adventure to to roof of Africa My kids and I had the pleasure of having George and his team for our expedition to the summit of Mt Kilimanjaro via the 7 day Lemosho trail. George and the team were excellent, professional, hard working and saw to our every need while on the mountain. They set up our camp every day, carried our camp bags, cooked all of our meals and even accommodated our food restrictions. He even offered to carry my day pack for me when he saw that I was struggling a bit near the summit. We all successfully summited with their help, encouragement and songs. I can't wait to go back and do the safari next time with George!

Amazing experience with George We completed an incredible 7-day trip to Tanzania that included a Kilimanjaro day hike and a safari experience in December 2024. While we didn’t go on safari with George, he was instrumental in organizing and planning every detail of our journey. From the very start, his responsiveness via WhatsApp made it easy to customize our itinerary, and his careful coordination ensured everything ran smoothly.George also personally led us on our Kilimanjaro day hike, guiding us with patience and enthusiasm while sharing local insights that made the experience unforgettable. Though we’re not long-distance hikers, he made sure the route fit our pace perfectly. Thanks to George’s thoughtful planning and the team’s dedication, this once-in-a-lifetime adventure was seamless from start to finish. The Serengeti luxury camp was a highlight, and we can’t recommend this experience highly enough.
