Healthy & Safety On Mt. Kilimanjaro

Unleash Your Adventure

Wherever your travel dreams lead, HWS Adventures brings them to life. We offer tailor-made itineraries designed to uncover Tanzania most breathtaking destinations.

Safety on Mt. Kilimanjaro - Our Number One Priority

At HWS Adventures, your safety comes before anything else. Mount Kilimanjaro, one of the famed Seven Summits and the highest peak in Africa at 19,341 ft, is a remarkable achievement for any adventurer. Although it requires no technical climbing skills, the mountain’s altitude places it firmly in the “extreme altitude” category — and this should never be underestimated.

Climbing Kilimanjaro means trekking through high-altitude zones in a remote environment, where conditions can change quickly. Every year, more than 1,000 climbers are evacuated due to altitude-related issues, and sadly, some never make it home. This is why choosing an experienced, safety-focused operator like HWS Adventures is essential.

Key Factors Affecting Your Safety on Mt. Kilimanjaro

With HWS Adventures, you are guided by a professional team trained in altitude response, wilderness first aid, and emergency decision-making — ensuring your journey to the Roof of Africa is not only unforgettable but also safe at every step.

How HWS Adventures Works to Keep You Safe on Kilimanjaro

Staying safe on Kilimanjaro begins long before you step onto the trail. At HWS Adventures, we take a proactive, thorough, and professional approach to minimize risk and protect every climber. This starts with understanding potential health concerns, proper planning, and ensuring our team is equipped and trained to respond to any situation on the mountain.

Before your climb, all guests complete a detailed medical questionnaire. For certain pre-existing conditions, we may request a doctor’s approval to ensure you are fit to trek safely. Your guide will also need to know any medications you are taking — including over-the-counter drugs — and whether you plan to use Diamox for acclimatization.

Professional Guide Training

Your safety relies heavily on the knowledge and judgment of your guide. At HWS Adventures, our guides undergo intensive Wilderness First Responder (WFR) training, which focuses on managing medical emergencies in remote, high-altitude environments.

We also partner with the Sentinel Outdoor Institute, a world-class high-altitude medical training organization that provides ongoing training in Tanzania. This ensures our guides stay current with the latest emergency protocols, altitude management strategies, and rescue procedures.

Emergency equipment is only effective when handled by trained professionals — and our guides know exactly how to use every piece.

Daily Health Checks & Monitoring

Communication is essential. If you feel tired, nauseous, breathless, or “not quite right,” your guide must know immediately. Throughout each hiking day, our guides monitor important warning signs such as difficulty walking, unusual exhaustion, loss of appetite, trouble breathing, frequent stops, mood changes, or signs of dehydration. This constant observation helps keep you safe as you gain altitude.

Daily Personal Health Check

Each evening, you will have a one-on-one health assessment with your guide. This includes measuring your oxygen saturation and resting pulse with a pulse oximeter, reviewing any symptoms using the Lake Louise Scoring System, and discussing how you feel both physically and mentally. Early detection ensures mild altitude discomfort does not develop into a serious medical issue.

Emergency Oxygen & Medical Supplies

HWS Adventures carries a full emergency medical kit on every climb, including emergency supplemental oxygen, a portable National Park rescue stretcher, and essential first aid supplies for minor injuries. It’s important to remember that oxygen is used only for emergency relief, and the only real treatment for acute mountain sickness (AMS) is immediate descent. If an injury prevents a climber from walking, the National Park stretcher system is used to ensure a safe evacuation.

Your safety is always our priority at HWS Adventures, and that’s why our team is fully prepared for any situation on the mountain. Our guides are trained to respond quickly and calmly, making sure you get the help you need without delay. With the right equipment and experienced support, you can focus on enjoying your Kilimanjaro journey with confidence and peace of mind.

Our Best Equipment & Gear

Kilimanjaro’s five climate zones—from humid rainforest to icy arctic terrain—require proper gear for warmth, comfort, and safety. At HWS Adventures, we make sure every climber is supported with high-quality mountain equipment. Our rugged, weather-proof tents keep you sheltered in harsh conditions, while our warm and dry dining tents provide a comfortable space to relax after long trekking days. We also supply clean and private toilet tents to ensure good hygiene throughout your climb.

Bringing the right personal gear is equally important for your safety. Poor-quality boots can cause painful blisters or ankle injuries, inadequate rain gear can lead to dangerous cold exposure, and insufficient sun protection can result in sunburn or even sunstroke. To help you prepare properly, our Kilimanjaro Packing List outlines exactly what you need to stay warm, dry, and protected every step of the way. With HWS Adventures guiding your preparation, you can focus on enjoying a safe and successful journey to the summit.

Hygiene, Food & Water Safety

Hygiene is extremely important on Kilimanjaro, especially since there are no showers on the mountain. At HWS Adventures, we emphasize regular handwashing and the use of hand sanitizer to keep stomach issues and infections at bay. Our team takes extra care to maintain a clean and healthy environment throughout the journey. All drinking water is boiled, filtered, and purified, and every meal is prepared under strict hygiene standards. We also provide private toilet tents so you don’t have to rely on unsanitary public facilities.

To keep your body strong and ready for the climb, it’s important to eat and drink consistently throughout the day. Regular snacks help maintain your energy levels, while drinking plenty of water supports proper acclimatization. By following these simple habits, along with the safety measures provided by HWS Adventures, you give yourself the best chance of staying healthy and feeling your best all the way to the summit.

Our Expert Advice on: Health & Safety on Kilimanjaro with HWS Adventures

Safety on Kilimanjaro begins long before you reach Tanzania. Proper physical preparation is essential, as Kilimanjaro is non-technical but still physically demanding. We strongly recommend getting a full medical check-up, discussing any medications or potential interactions with your doctor, and asking about recommended vaccines for Tanzania. It’s also important to talk to your doctor about Diamox for altitude support and to secure comprehensive travel insurance that specifically covers high-altitude trekking and emergency evacuation. Building a solid fitness foundation through consistent training will make your climb safer, smoother, and far more enjoyable.

At HWS Adventures, your safety is our highest commitment. Our expert guides, strict safety protocols, and high-quality equipment ensure you are monitored, supported, and protected throughout your journey. By arriving well-prepared, bringing the right gear, and following your guide’s instructions, you greatly reduce risk and increase your chances of a successful summit. With HWS Adventures by your side, you can climb with confidence, knowing your health and safety are prioritized every step of the way.

Known as the “Coca-Cola” route, the Marangu Route is the oldest and most established trail on Mount Kilimanjaro. Many hikers favor it because of its gradual slope, making it one of the easier paths to the summit. This is also the only route that offers dormitory-style hut accommodations, providing a level of comfort not available on other trails.

For a more realistic and safer climb, we recommend a 6-day itinerary, which allows an extra day for acclimatization and significantly increases the chances of successfully reaching the summit. At HWS Adventures, we generally do not lead climbs on this route due to its limited scenic variety and the fact that the ascent and descent share the same path, making it the most crowded trail. However, it remains a practical option during the rainy season, when the hut accommodations are particularly valuable.

The Rongai Route is the only trail that approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the northern side, starting about 45 km from Moshi and 69 km from Arusha. Known for its tranquility and steadily growing popularity, Rongai is considered one of the easiest and most beautiful routes on this side of the mountain. Its peaceful nature and gentle gradients make it ideal for trekkers seeking a quieter, remote experience while still enjoying diverse landscapes, unique flora, and sightings of wildlife along the way.

The standard duration for the Rongai Route is 6 days, though most hikers choose the 7-day option for improved acclimatization and a higher summit success rate. Unlike the Marangu Route, which offers hut accommodations, Rongai is a full camping experience, with comfortable tents pitched by your dedicated porters at the end of each day. With stunning scenery, fewer crowds, and a smooth approach to the summit, the Rongai Route is one of the northern side’s most rewarding trails—an excellent choice for climbers looking for calm, beauty, and consistent success with HWS Adventures.

The Lemosho Route is widely regarded as the most scenic trail on Mount Kilimanjaro, offering breathtaking panoramic views from multiple sides of the mountain. As one of the newer and less crowded routes, Lemosho provides an ideal balance of stunning landscapes, peaceful trekking, and a high summit success rate. At HWS Adventures, it is our preferred route, and most of our clients choose Lemosho for their Kilimanjaro climb. Feedback from hikers consistently highlights its beauty, comfort, and unforgettable experience.

The journey begins at Londorossi Gate, situated at an altitude of 2,360 meters, on the western approach to the mountain. The trail winds through lush rainforest, home to some of the region’s most unique wildlife, before continuing to the mountain’s third summit at Shira Ridge. This carefully planned route offers excellent acclimatization, making it both safe and highly rewarding for climbers seeking a memorable adventure to the Roof of Africa.

Dream trip to the roof of Africa Climbing Kilimanjaro was a dream come true and George and his team made our journey to the roof of Africa so enjoyable. The team of guides looked after our group so well. They were all really knowledgeable and made us feel safe and empowered to complete the trek. They regularly checked our oxygen levels, ensured were were drinking enough water and paced us well to acclimatise to the altitude. On summit day George was determined to get me to the top after I fell behind the other two members of my group. He carried my pack, sang to me, comforted me when I cried, and was so patient even when I was walking slower than I thought was humanly possible. I eventually made it to the summit thanks in no small part to him.George always had the safety and comfort of our group in mind. For example, on summit day he made the decision for us to descend to a lower camp than planned for our final night due to the time spent at altitude that day (as I was slow). The whole team of porters were so friendly and professional and felt like family by the end of the trip.I dream of climbing Mount Meru next and will definitely do it with HWS Adventures when I do.

Couldn’t have been better! George provided the best experience possible for my mom and me. From the first meeting and kind, specific instructions and tips, we knew we were in good hands. George’s entire team was experienced, friendly, welcoming and accommodating! The work these people do to provide comprehensive guidance is phenomenal! I would definitely choose George to climb with again. My mom was able to make it to the top at 81 years of age, thanks to George and his brother, Kaburu’s special attention.

Kilimanjaro Machame Route and Safari This summer, my father and I traveled with HWS Adventures. We climbed Kilimanjaro together and followed it with an incredible safari an experience we still think back to all the time.We chose the Machame route, which turned out to be perfect: stunning scenery, enjoyable hiking, and not overwhelmingly difficult. Our guides were exactly what you’d hope for funny, knowledgeable, and genuinely caring. They checked on us every day, made sure we were feeling well, adjusted our pace, and planned breaks so we wouldn’t overexert ourselves. Something we valued greatly about this company is that the porters are paid fairly and their wellbeing is clearly taken seriously. The safari was just as memorable. We spent three days exploring the Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti National Park, seeing incredible wildlife up close. The lodges were wonderful comfortable and located right inside the parks, so we were surrounded by nature at all times. All in all, it was a fantastic trip for me and my dad one we will never forget.

Excellent adventure to to roof of Africa My kids and I had the pleasure of having George and his team for our expedition to the summit of Mt Kilimanjaro via the 7 day Lemosho trail. George and the team were excellent, professional, hard working and saw to our every need while on the mountain. They set up our camp every day, carried our camp bags, cooked all of our meals and even accommodated our food restrictions. He even offered to carry my day pack for me when he saw that I was struggling a bit near the summit. We all successfully summited with their help, encouragement and songs. I can't wait to go back and do the safari next time with George!

Amazing experience with George We completed an incredible 7-day trip to Tanzania that included a Kilimanjaro day hike and a safari experience in December 2024. While we didn’t go on safari with George, he was instrumental in organizing and planning every detail of our journey. From the very start, his responsiveness via WhatsApp made it easy to customize our itinerary, and his careful coordination ensured everything ran smoothly.George also personally led us on our Kilimanjaro day hike, guiding us with patience and enthusiasm while sharing local insights that made the experience unforgettable. Though we’re not long-distance hikers, he made sure the route fit our pace perfectly. Thanks to George’s thoughtful planning and the team’s dedication, this once-in-a-lifetime adventure was seamless from start to finish. The Serengeti luxury camp was a highlight, and we can’t recommend this experience highly enough.
